Summer has arrived in Japan, bringing days of intense heat.

Amazon recently held a major sale, so I took the opportunity to send food to a local volunteer and stock up on around six months' worth of meals for the community cats who live outdoors.

During the summer, good nutrition is important, but hydration becomes even more essential. That's why I mainly feed them wet food at this time of year.

Cats are believed to have descended from desert-dwelling ancestors, so they naturally have a low thirst drive. Since mealtime is often the highlight of their day, I always try to find ways to help them enjoy their food while taking in as much moisture as possible.

I've noticed that other kind people in the neighborhood also feed these cats. Many offer dry food, and I've even seen some elderly neighbors give them dried sardines.

While dried sardines are a favorite treat for many cats, they are also relatively high in salt and phosphorus. Because outdoor cats may already have aging kidneys or health conditions that we cannot detect, I try to offer meals that provide plenty of moisture. I also include some renal-support wet food, which contains controlled levels of phosphorus. None of us coordinate with one another, but somehow we each quietly play our own part in caring for them.

Life outdoors is never easy. Unlike indoor cats, they cannot simply be taken to a veterinarian the moment something seems wrong, and the extreme summer heat and winter cold place a constant strain on their bodies.

All I can do is hope that every meal I leave behind helps them stay a little healthier and a little stronger.

I replace their water three times a day, yet even then it often becomes warm within hours under the summer sun.

Another important part of caring for outdoor cats during the warmer months is protecting them from ticks, fleas, and other parasites.

I regularly apply NexGard COMBO for Cats, which I obtain from my veterinarian.

It helps protect them not only from ticks and fleas but also from several internal parasites, making it an important part of their seasonal care.

More than anything, I hope every cat can have a full stomach, fresh water, and the chance to live as safely and as comfortably as possible.
